This week is Children’s Mental Health Week (6-12 February 2023)
Back in 2019 I had a corporate career, working in an education charity. It has always been very important to me that children not be affected by the life they are born into, whether that means social status, the trauma their parents are navigating, or any other factor.
When the pandemic came, I saw that the impact on children was going to be HUGE and that was a major driver for me to add a CPD accredited Trauma informed coaching certification to my skillset.
My coaching is mostly with adults, although I do also work directly with chronically disengaged children.
But helping adults IS the key to helping children to a life of freedom and hope….
I was speaking to a policeman at the weekend – virtually all the children known to them come from a single parent family. Now, I am from a single parent family and my children are too (although they see both parents regularly) so I am heavily invested in not becoming a statistic… Not just for my kids and me, but for EVERYONE who has the potential to be impacted.
Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years). For example:
- experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect
- witnessing violence in the home or community
- having a family member attempt or die by suicide
Also included are aspects of the child’s environment that can undermine their sense of safety, stability, and bonding, such as growing up in a household with:
- substance use problems
- mental health problems
- instability due to parental separation or household members being in prison
Please note the examples above are not a complete list of adverse experiences and many other traumatic experiences could impact health and wellbeing.
ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance use problems in adolescence and adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education, job opportunities, and earning potential.
However, ACEs can be prevented and I see a huge part of that is in helping the home environment to become more emotionally regulated. But so many of us were never taught how to do that….
This should be standard school curriculum stuff!!
Children need to know they are safe and loved – when the parents can feel safe and loved, they can’t help but pass that on to their children…. And that is what my life mission is now…..
Whether it is helping people feel financially empowered through my financial coaching
Helping people accept and love ALL of who they are in the journey of BECOMING UNAPOLOGETICALLY YOU
Directly helping chronically disengaged children to find hope for a life worth living….
I never want a child to live in fear
So, I will shout about Children’s Mental Health Week all year round….
